In this article we will talk about the book of Hariri's Māqāmāt which is a collection of prose tales written in Arabic. It was an excellent work and the author, a scholar and a very talented person, managed to succeed in presenting a mixture of prose and poetry. This famous Arabic book is written by one of the most famous Arab poets Hariri who was born in 1054 A.D., he wrote his masterpiece as an expression of his personal philosophy that includes religion as well as life. Hariri started writing his first work, a book entitled “The Book of the Mirror” (Kitāb al-Mirār), in 1048 A.D. and he continued to write on various topics and subjects during the next ten years. After this period, he composed another great work, “The Book of the Kaabah” (Kitāb al-Masjid al-, Kubba), which has been considered as his most important and greatest creation; it is an excellent collection of prose tales with some poetry as well as prose tales. He succeeded in bringing a mixture of prose and poetry together in a very effective way. He improved on the style of writing employed in the earlier Arabic tales, which were written with a steady flow of sustained prose. He produced many excellent works in his lifetime including “The Book of the Trench” (Kitāb al-Khandaq), “The Book of the Green Pavilion” (Kitāb al-Tandīqa), “The Book of Praise” (Kitāb al-Munjazza), and many others. Hariri was born and spent his childhood and youth in his hometown, Tripoli, Lebanon. His biography is unknown but it has been assumed that he was born in the prosperous city of that period. He joined the official court of the Fatimid Caliph al-Aziz Billah at Cairo, Egypt, where he lived for more than twenty years. Hariri's biography along with his works are still unknown to the modern world, but according to Islamic beliefs, he was one of the most important personalities who lived during the 11th century. He was a typical example of Muslim Arab culture and religious life at that period.
